Arrival time: 2:00 pm
We’ll start by climbing up the path that leads to the Fuente del Avellano which we’ll soon leave to take a small path that zigzags across the hill and through the woods. A surprise awaits at the end of the path: we’re at the base of the Generalife, with The Palace (i.e. The Alhambra) above our heads and Granada at our feet.
We are at the Acequia Real (Royal Water Channel) also known as Acequia del Sultán (Sultan’s Water Channel), which for eight centuries has brought water to the hill from the Darro River. We will walk along the channel and look into the valley.
In front of us appears the impressive building of the Abbey of Sacromonte. This is a good time to talk about it’s unique history – a story based on schemes and lies designed by the intellectuals of the time. From here we’ll go to the Castle of Santa Elena or Silla del Moro (it can only be visited on Saturdays).
We’ll descend back to Granada following the steps from the water: swimming pools, aqueduct between Alhambra and Generalife and return to Darro. From the terraces along the river we can enjoy a refreshing beer overlooking the Alhambra and recall a ride full of discoveries.
