We have planned this excursion to get to discover the most important prehistoric and natural monuments of Antequera (Málaga). The Torcal is a Geo-Park very relevant as Karst landscape. The old city, on the top of the hill, has a well preserved Arabic castle and Roman remains. Also important churches from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Starting and finishing point: Avd. Capitán Moreno, Granada (see the map)
Departure time (Granada): 8:00 am
Arrival time: 6:00 pm – but it depends on the pace of the group
The trip between Granada and Antequera takes us one hour. Our first stop includes a visit to the dolmens of Antequera, a megalithic complex of great European importance. The visit will be guided by a local expert guide and we’ll spend 1h and 45 min there.
After this, we’ll move to Torcal Natural Park, which is known as the “Rocky Hell” for its unusual landforms and is one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The area was designated a Natural Site of National Interest in July 1929, and a Natural Park Reserve of about 17 square kilometers was created in October 1978. Our guide has designed a route with two stages, to discover the main geological features, and will explain the origin and evolution of this unique landscape. We will have our picnic in a sunny place on the route.
After our walking in Torcal, we will have the opportunity to visit the old neighborhood of Antequera, where the castle and two important churches are located. From this point, there are stunning views of Antequera, its agricultural plain and the strange rocky hill called “Peña de los Enamorados” (the lovers’ rock).
We recommend carrying 2l of water. Sunglasses, sun cream, protective lip cream, and a hat. Base layer, lightweight or warm fleece (depending on the weather forecast) and windstopper (Torcal is a mountain exposed to the wind), gloves, headwear, long trousers, and trekking shoes. Torch or headlamp, hiking sticks, and your personal first aid kit.
Participants should take nuts, dried fruits, and sandwiches for the picnic in the countryside.
Price of “custom date”: €70/pp. 2 people minimum. It includes a guided trip, the visit to the dolmens, insurance, and transportation. It doesn’t include the fee of the Alcazaba and Santa María church.
Purchasing Conditions: Excursions must be booked and paid for at least one week in advance. Participants must arrive at the meeting point on time. The group will wait for participants for five minutes but then leave. In this situation, no money will be reimbursed.
