The trip:
We will travel from Granada to Monachil village (25min by car) and park in the upper area of the town, on an old threshing floor, over de Cahorros de Monacil, which is now a car park.
From this point, we will start to walk through farms, plots of land and olive groves. We will leave the main track taking a footpath that winds downhill through a rough, rocky landscape, whose shapes look like old ruins. These rocks are limestone and dolomite. Erosion has cracked the rocks into small pieces that cover the ground. We need to be careful at this stage with the loose stones on the path.
We will cross the river and turn 180 degrees to walk in the opposite direction along the other side of the valley and along the riverside. After passing a small meadow perfect for a break, we will enter through the dramatic gorge called Cahorros de Monachil. This is the most spectacular part of the hike, but the path is narrow and quite awkward in some sections due to the rocks sticking out over the path. You must bend down or crawl sometimes. We will make use of the metal handles set into the rock. The path takes you across hanging bridges and up and down some steps.
At the end of the valley, we will find an irrigation channel and follow it. The path leads to a surfaced track that, after a few final slopes, returns us to the threshing floor where we parked.
