Circular trip around Cerro Huenes Mountain and ascent to its summit (1,800M) from where we will be able to enjoy a 360º-degree view of Granada. The trail goes through the Sierra Nevada National Park, surrounding one of the most remarkable medium-height mountains of this Sierra, which has densely vegetated forests of pines and aromatic plant bushes.
The trip:
Cerro Huenes is a mountain of dolomitic limestone nature with three summits higher than 1,800M and with fantastic landscape.
We will begin our trip at the parking lot from where there is a track that goes to the Botanical Garden of La Cortijuela. We will cross over the Puente de los Siete Ojos (the bridge with seven eyes) (1,430M) and start climbing a steep slope. As we continue our ascent we will have better views of this part of Sierra Nevada (Cerro del Tamboril; Cerro Gordo, Pico de la Carne), among the various summits Trevenque Peak stands out due to its distinctive silhouette.
We will arrive to Llano del Chopo Plain, the perfect place for a break before the final ascent to the triangulation station of Cerro Huenes. Fantastic views wait for us in the summit along with the possible company of Iberian ibexes.
After a break and eating some snacks we will start the descent to Fuente Fría. The trail faces west and passes by an old forest shelter, which today is used as a stable. At this point the trails completely surrounds the mountain going through landscapes of limestone sand and rocks of different shades. The trail continues descending slowly until it reaches Huenes String, which we will cross over a bridge closing the circular trip once we reach the track that takes us back to the Botanical Garden.
