If you are looking for a different kind of weekend at The Alpujarra, this is your hiking trip! Don’t miss it.

  • Day 1

    Arrival to Granada

    Group meeting at 7:30 pm.

At this stage, we’ll pass through thick and abundant pine forests and areas with high Mediterranean mountain vegetation. In May snowmelt results in streams down the slopes. Stunning views that reach the African coast on clear days.
Finally, we’ll find the main irrigation channel net of the area and we’ll walk down untill reaching Laroles village.
It is not a difficult stage but we have to take care with the accumulated high descent. We will hike along forestry tracks and footpaths.

  • Day 3

    Laroles – Válor

    • Route length: 14 Km

We´ll leave the old road C-431 on the cross towards Laroles in direction Mairena, taking the road known as the Sierra de los Molinos because there is an irrigation canal that feed nine old mills.

We’ll continue along the path to the left to cross the gorge and river with a small waterfall between two stones covered with ferns. In this place we can enjoy the lush vegetation and fruit trees (fig, cherry, almond, olive and walnut) accompanying us up the path to Júbar, a small town with only 60 neighbors. We can see the oldest church in all Alpujarra (XVI century) with its roof vane mixing Jewish and Muslim symbols.

The trail leaves Jubar near a water spring which supplies the old laundry where we can resupply with fresh water. We walk 1,5 Km and arrive to Mairena where we can enjoy a breathtaking view from a balcony. Reaching the Era Baja, we will find the path that leads to Nechite. We´ll descend down to the river passing the ruins of an old mill. After crossing the river we reach the upper part of Nechite, where are two excelent water spprings “Fuente del Rojo” or “Fuente Martín”. This town has the original structure that divides the town into three neighborhoods separated by beautiful orchards.

The route continues along a path that is accompanied by an acequia (irrigation chanel) and under the shade of old chestnut trees until reaching Valor village, where we ended this  day of route.

On our way we can see the Puente de la Tableta, and after crossing the river, we take the track. 20 minutes after we will be arriving to Cuesta Viña, where we see (and taste if we want) a ferruginous water fountain.

We continue to take the path on the left by a trail that crosses a couple of irrigation chanels until we reach a road towards Yégen. Yégen is internationally famous, thanks to the English writer Gerald Brenan. We can see the house where he lived, besides the church.
