The walk:
Our hike starts at the hilly Albaicin Quarter. We’ll walk all the way up until we find the location where first Iberian-Roman settlement was located. The wall and the door remains indicate the exact location of the first fortress from the Ziri period.
We’ll keep going up until we reach the top of the hill where the San Miguel Alto Chapel is situated. From here we’ll be rewarded with the best view of the city including the Alhambra, the Albaicin and the city centre. This bird’s view allows us to understand the evolution of the city between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries.
A small path among pine trees takes us outside the walls of the old Nasrid city until a second and lonelier viewpoint. From here we can access the Sacromonte, where we’ll visit the Sacromonte Caves Museum – a place to understand the life and culture of the people of Sacromonte. Poor families settled this quarter and, here, some of the most peculiar flamenco songs of Granada were born.
La Vereda de Enmedio goes along the hill of Sacromonte and brings us back, through a network of narrow streets with magnificent views of the Alhambra, Generalife, and the Darro Valley, to the Albaicin. Once in the heart of the Albaicin is time to remember this exciting walk through the story with a refreshing beer.
Recommendations:
It is a semi-urban hike. From the centre of Granada to San Miguel Alto there are 150m of ascent with significant steep slopes. Access to the caves is through a small path in the countryside. Therefore it is necessary to bring appropriate footwear for hiking.
