Exploring the heart of the Alpujarra

Excursion to the Alpujarra

La Alpujarra is a magical region found on the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada range. Its white villages are literally perched on the mountains.

The landscape is a wonderful blend of natural vegetation and fruit trees growing on hand made terraces built centuries ago. Walking along old footpaths and up and down staircases carved into the rock, we will arrive at different viewpoints from which we will have a bird’s eye view of the fantastic scenery.

In spring, the snowmelt flows through fountains, streams and waterfalls, creating an inviting landscape bursting with flowers for us to roam through.

  • Day 1

    • After breakfast, we will go to Trevélez, the highest village in Spain. The organization of the village, into three neighbourhoods, reflects its Spanish-Muslim structure

    • The hike will take us through small villages, such as Ferreirola, Atalbéitar and Busquistar, which are the best examples of the traditional architecture of the Alpujarra
    • We will have our picnic during the hike. When we finish walking, a bus will take us to the nearby Poqueira valley. We will stay in the village of Capileira which boasts a wide variety of restaurants and bars in which we can have dinner

    • After having our picnic we will start the return leg with stunning views of the high snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada. We will walk along the irrigation channels returning to Capileira, where we will sleep for a second night with time to have dinner in the village.

We will leave the hotel at 7:30 – 8:00 am. It is very important to stick to the timetable because it’s necessary to rest between each day’s hike. We will have 3 hours rest before dinner (in Spain 9 o’clock or later!), which, including time to stretch properly, will allow us to be in perfect condition for the following day.

Weather in the Sierra Nevada

In Andalusia, the weather in spring is very unpredictable. We can have high temperatures as if it were summer (25º C or more) or cool, rainy weather. Any storms tend to pass quickly and the majority of the days are warm and sunny. Average temperatures from the last few years for the month of May indicate maximum temperatures of 24ºC and minimum temperatures of 12º.

Guides and Safety

All our guides have the necessary training to ensure the complete safety of the group.

We will keep the group together and in contact by using walkie talkies. Our guides have all taken first aid courses.

According to our Terms and Conditions document, the guides can change any itinerary in case of bad weather or any other circumstances which could affect the safety of the group, without any refunds being given.

Medical considerations

We ask that our hikers inform us of the existence of any chronic or cardiovascular illness which could interfere with hiking activities. To this end, we will send out a form which must be completed. The personal information which is given is covered by our data protection policy and will not be used for anything other than to provide us with the information necessary for this activity to be carried out well.

For the same reasons we need to know about any allergies.

A good level of physical fitness is required and previous experience of routes of a similar difficulty, length and accumulated height difference. The pace that we will follow is not a sporting one but a pace which will allow interpretation and interaction, however, experience or regular hiking is essential.
